UPS tracking statuses explained
UPS tracking is usually precise, but its scan names are written for warehouses, not shoppers.
What a UPS tracking number looks like
Most start with 1Z, followed by 16 letters and numbers (for example 1Z999AA10123456784). Some freight and Mail Innovations numbers look different.
The statuses you'll see most
- Order Processed: Ready for UPS / Shipper created a label: the label exists; UPS doesn't have the package yet.
- Origin Scan / Pickup Scan: UPS has it.
- Departed from Facility / Arrived at Facility: moving between UPS buildings.
- Destination Scan: it reached the building that delivers to you.
- Out for Delivery Today: on the brown truck.
- Exception: something changed the plan, such as an address correction, weather, a missed sort or a closed business. Read the line under it: some exceptions need nothing from you, others ask you to contact UPS.
- The receiver was not available / Delivery attempted: UPS usually tries again on the next business day, up to three attempts, before holding it at a UPS Access Point or returning it.
- Delivered: often with a note like Front Door, Garage or Receiver.
SurePost and UPS Ground Saver
Cheaper UPS services sometimes hand the package to USPS for the final step. Tracking then shows "Delivered to Local Post Office" or a second tracking number. The post office delivers it, usually within a day or two.
When to do something
- No scan for three or more business days on a domestic package: contact the sender, who is UPS's customer.
- An exception asking for action: follow the link or call UPS with the tracking number.
- Marked delivered but missing: check with neighbors and the delivery photo if there is one, then contact the sender.
