FedEx tracking statuses explained
FedEx groups its scans into a few big steps. Here's what each one means for you.
What a FedEx tracking number looks like
Usually 12 digits (FedEx Express and Ground) or 15 digits (Ground). Some FedEx Ground Economy numbers are 20 or 22 digits and are delivered by USPS at the end.
The statuses you'll see most
- Label created / Shipment information sent to FedEx: no package scanned yet.
- Picked up: FedEx has it.
- In transit / Departed FedEx location / Arrived at FedEx location: moving through hubs. FedEx Ground packages can sit at a hub overnight without new scans.
- At local FedEx facility: at the station that delivers to you.
- On FedEx vehicle for delivery: out for delivery today.
- Delivery exception: the plan changed, for example an incorrect address, a closed business, weather or a missed connection. Many clear themselves the next business day.
- Available for clearance / Clearance delay: international packages waiting for customs.
- Delivered: with a location such as front door or receptionist.
Timing
FedEx Ground usually takes one to five business days in the United States. Express services carry a guaranteed date shown in tracking; when it slips, the shipper may be able to claim a refund of the shipping cost.
When to do something
- A delivery exception that hasn't cleared after one business day.
- No movement for three business days domestically, or a week internationally.
- Customs asking for documents or payment: confirm it on fedex.com yourself rather than through a link in a text message.
